Honfleur, France

Honfleur is about a 50 minute drive straight south of Etretat on the Normandy coast.  Ok, the drive’s not straight but it is located directly south!  Honfleur sits on the south side of the mouth of the river Seine.  It is this strategic location that gave it a place in history since it’s first recorded mention in 1027.

The old port has been a staging area for many battles throughout the middle ages.  Today, this historic area is a great location to relax and dine at one of the many restaurants bordering the harbor, or stroll the streets of the medieval town center.

To me there’s nothing quite like the combination of a harbor full of boats, surrounded by beautiful old buildings and outdoor restaurants.  It makes a perfect place for a casual stroll, then stop for a café or perhaps a glass of wine!
